Magnolia, a quartet with a traditional ensemble, explores sonic spaces that border on collective improvisation. Starting with microscopic work on the timbre of each instrument, using repetition and fragmentation, the quartet distorts and restructures its compositions in real-time. Taking its musical imagination from the pictorial procedures of cubism and surrealism, computer bug, and the organic rhythms of Gnaoui and Mandingo musical traditions, Magnolia makes sounds and silences bloom in flourishing, lush rhythmic and harmonic polyphony, driven by the singular energy of its four members.
